The Golfo de Penas, in the heart of Chilean Patagonia, is a large and tumultuous gulf infamous for its unruly seas and spontaneous storms. The gulf’s tempestuous nature has for centuries tormented ships and sailors, and because of this there exists little to no scientific descriptions of its oceanographic systems. Furthermore, the diverse influx of glacial rivers, various forms of geologic makeup, and diverse array of marine life make Golfo de Penas especially important for investigation and conservation.
